My story behind my topic...

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy, noun, a disorder that causes periods of extreme daytime sleepiness.(May also cause muscle weakness.) When you have narcolepsy, you may have trouble sleeping at night, falling asleep suddenly, and hallucinations.

I picked this topic to research because I’ve never heard of anything like this before. So, it couldn’t be a better topic to research. I couldn’t imagine how people could deal with having this condition. To randomly fall asleep in mid conversation, eating, driving. Its very dangerous. Another reason why I picked this topic is to make it known. Someone might have this disorder, but may not know what to call it or how to treat it.

There are a lot of causes to narcolepsy. It is hereditary, so if someone in your family has this dissorder you could be prone to having it. Infections, brains injuries; such as tumors, strokes, or trauma from car accidents, or military-related wounds are other causes of narcolepsy. The main cause is low levels of histamine, a substance and chemical in the brain and blood that promotes wakefulness.

Many life threatening car accidents have been caused by someone whos had narcolepsy without knowing and has fallen asleep at the wheel of a car. By making this research paper about narcolepsy I want to inform people about this disorder so they can be more cautious and prevent future accidents and save lives.

Narcolepsy symptoms usually begin during the teen or young adult years. Narcolepsy is not rare, but it is an underrecongnized and underdiagnosed condition. It is estimated to affect about one every 3,000 Americans.

Why should people know more about Narcolepsy?
